I'd heard good things about Hamelin Station Stay, but never had the time to call in and check it out. Earlier this year though, we spent a night there, and loved it.
It's the perfect place to relax for a few days, or call in on your way to Denham.
Where is Hamelin Station Stay?
You'll find Hamelin Station Stay 722km north of Perth, 28km west of the Overland Roadhouse, 104 south east of Denham and 160km ENE of Steep Point.
If you are coming from Perth, its the perfect place to stop for the night. Its literally a few hundred metres off the road going to Denham, and if you are going further north only 28km in.
You can camp in unpowered sites, or stay in a room in the restored shearers quarters. These are historic and rustic from the outside but modern, clean and extremely well maintained on the inside.
The toilet and shower blocks are modern, clean and tidy, and there are laundry facilities to use as well.
The kitchen at Hamelin Station stay is awesome, with lots of options for food preparation and cooking, a massive timber table and fire to relax around along with BBQ facilities and outdoor area.
Wildlife and Conservation
I wasn't actually aware of the bush heritage relationship that Hamelin Station Stay had until I arrived. It's a popular place for bird watchers and other animal lovers to stay, with a huge number of native animals. The station is run by Bush Heritage Australia, who buys land and establishes private, conservation reserves.
Things to see nearby
The Hamelin Pool Stromatolites are a popular attraction only a few kms up the road, with everything else a decent drive away. Shell beach, Nanga Station, Eagle Bluff, Steep Point, Denham and Francois Peron National Park are all well worthy of a visit too.
Is it worth a stay?
Hamelin Station stay is an amazing place. We thoroughly enjoyed our night here, and would highly recommend it. There are 113 trip advisor reviewers as I write this, with 82% saying excellent and 17% saying very good. It's quiet, clean, easily accessible and has a whole heap of great history, walks and people.
Hamelin Station Stay vs Hamelin Pool Caravan Park
Due to an unfortunate mishap with our bookings, half of our group ended up staying at the Hamelin Pool Caravan Park instead of Hamelin Station. This was a bit of a pain, as we needed to prepare our gear before heading out to Steep Point. Those that stayed at Hamelin Pool Caravan Park came down to the Station stay, and all commented on how much better it was. I never visited the Caravan Park, but I'll trust the words of my mates.
