Kungku Kamu Fig Tree Waterhole and camp
Roadside stops are normally pretty boring and uneventful, and often we don’t bother to write about them. Gravel pits are a dime in a dozen, but every now and again you stumble across something that’s a lot better, and that’s the Kungku Kamu Fig Tree, which was a ripper place to stop.
Where is Kungku Kamu?
You’ll find this spot roughly an hour out of Winton, towards Longreach. It’s literally only a few kilometres off the main highway, and is easy to get to.
What makes this worth a stop?
We initially pulled into Dinosaur Creek to check that out, and whilst its not a bad location, its close to the road, very open and asides from a pretty big rock mound, there’s not much to see.
Kungku Kamu is much more private, with a beautiful big creek (that is mostly dry), and it has even more big rocks to check out.
What’s most unexpected though, is the waterfall and pool itself. We were expecting to see a manky green pool, but it was clean, clear and stunning when we visited, and it’d been a while since any real rain.
Our kids had an absolute ball running up and down the dry creek, and playing in the bottom, and it made for so much more than your average gravel pit stop.
Is it 2WD and caravan friendly?
Initially, you’d comfortably get a 2WD and caravan in, but you soon get to a part of the track (with lots of places to turn around nearby) that would test anything but a high clearance off road van, and it deteriorates a bit further from there.
Our Reconn R2 had no issues going through the little inflows to the creeks, but anything longer or lower would struggle big time, and you’d damage something.
In short, yes, it suits 2WD’s and caravans, but you have to park closer to the road and walk to the waterhole.
Is this worth a stop?
If you are looking for a stop not far out of Winton, this is the pick of the bunch. We really enjoyed a lazy afternoon here, and the waterhole was a major surprise.
