Lighthouse Crossing Reserve; sensational free camping on the Upper Murray
If you’re after stunning, riverfront camping on the upper Murray River, Lighthouse Crossing Reserve is the place to go. We thoroughly enjoyed a night here, right next to the flowing water.

Where is Lighthouse Crossing Reserve?
You’ll find this camping area not far out of Corryong, which is a good place to refill and get what you need, if you’re running low. We were just about out of fuel after coming from Khancoban and along the Alpine Way.

What amenities are there?
There are no amenities here, and you need to be completely self contained to camp here. That does not mean collection of grey water, but your own toilet on board is a must.

What’s the camping like?
There’s not too many places as easily accessible and as picturesque as Lighthouse Crossing Reserve. I understand that the grass can be a bit long at times, but when we visited it was absolutely pristine, with a few of the camp sites as good as you’ d get in any caravan park.
There’s a heap of camping areas around the massive S shapes of the river, with several spots away from the water as well. At a guess, I reckon you’d comfortably get 30 setups camping here without an issue.

What does it cost
Camping at Lighthouse Crossing Reserve is completely and utterly free, which is pretty amazing given how beautiful it is.

Do you need a 4WD?
No, and we saw a couple of 2WD’s here. That said, there are sections you’d want to be careful of going due to lack of clearance, or traction if its rained.
Is it Caravan accessible?
Yep, and the majority of people camping here had caravans. It’s the perfect base to hang out for a few days, with the drive in a short gravel road that is in good condition, and lots of room to choose a camp site, and to turn around if you needed to.

Boating, fishing and swimming
Unknown to us when we set up, we actually camped right next to the Boat Ramp here, which is a narrow, steep, gravel track down to the water, which we thought was just river access. You will get a few people bring boats down, and they launch and head off in either direction.
The Upper Murray flows very quickly, to the point that if you were in the middle you’d probably have a hard time getting out again. We swam, carefully, and only up to about a metre deep, because any deeper and you’re going away with the water.
It is cold, but refreshing, clear and a stunning part of the world. Fishing here is hugely popular, and whilst we did flick lures around, we caught nothing!

This is a magic spot
This is comfortably one of the better camp sites in Victoria that is easy to access. It’s free, stunning and absolutely worth a night or two if you’re coming through!
