Erskine Falls; a big, beautiful single drop waterfall in Victoria
Victoria was not a place I expected to find a handful of truly awesome waterfalls, but you’ll find plenty. We explored a heap, but Erskine Falls was another amazing one that we visited not far from the Great Ocean Road, and its completely, and utterly worth a look if you are in the area.
The walk is short and steep, but it makes for a quick visit that is thoroughly enjoyable.
Where is Erskine Falls?
You’ll find this spectacular place not too far off the Great Ocean Road, only around 10km away from the beautiful Lorne. If you have time, have a good look around the coast and inland parts of the Great Ocean Road. It’s an unbelievable region.
Do you need a 4WD to get there?
Nope, its bitumen the entire way in, which is great. It is signed not to tow anything in, which makes sense given the final descent is very steep, and fairly narrow. There’s also limited parking available for longer vehicles, so leave the trailer at camp.
How easy is it to get to the falls?
Some waterfalls are a massive hike to get to, with a heap of effort required. I’m glad to report that Erskine Falls is extremely quick, but its also fairly steep, which means a bit of effort on the way back up!
The entire walk it basically steps with a few platforms and flat sections to take a break on, and we laughed at the number of different guesses at how many stairs there actually are. We made it down, and back up again with a really decent stop at the bottom in under 30 minutes, and you feel like you’ve had a bit of a workout when you get back up.
If you don’t want to go all the way to the bottom, you’ll get a glimpse of the falls from a small viewing platform not too far down, which is even worth a look.
Are Erskine Falls pretty?
I was quite surprised at how beautiful these falls are. You can’t get that close to them, but they are big, and very picturesque, and even from the viewing platform they’re well worth the walk down.
Is it worth a look?
Yep, absolutely. These are easy to drive to, fast to get to and really picturesque. It’s a shame that you can’t get too close to them, but they’re really beautiful. I think we preferred Beauchamp Falls, but that’s a different kettle of fish again, and they’re all beautiful in their own way.
