16 of the Best Camping in Victoria options
On our last night in Victoria, I look back and smile. It’s been a state that has completely and utterly surprised us, and today I want to share with you the best camping in Victoria that we’ve found. It’s been so good that we’re coming back for a second round, and can’t wait.
From pristine coastline to incredible rainforests, mountain ranges with insane views and the incredible High Country, Victoria has some of the best camping we have done anywhere in Australia.
I know we’ll be back, as we have had some of our most favourite amazing camping experiences here, and that’s a fairly large statement to make.
If your chasing Free Camping in Victoria, then we’ve got a post dedicated to that too.
Where’s the best camping in Victoria?
McLennans Punt
We love quiet, water front camping that doesn’t cost the earth, and McLennans Punt nails this to the absolute tee. Unfortunately we were only able to get one night booked in here due to a long weekend, but its a truly awesome place to stay, and we’d happily go back for much longer.
Cost: $15.60 per site, per night

Style of camping suitable: Small camping setups. Tents, small camper trailers, vehicles. You could possibly squeeze a caravan in here, but its very tight

Glendinning
Nothing beats free, water front camping, and Glendinning is a magic dam not far from the Grampians that we had a great couple of nights at. There’s a huge area for you to camp, with plenty of things to keep you occupied around the dam, and when its completely free, its the ultimate winner

Booking requirements: No bookings required
Pet Friendly: Yes
Style of camping suitable: All types, with 4WD’s having the greatest options

Halls Gap Lakeside Caravan Park
We’re not normally ones to stay at Caravan Parks, but the Halls Gap Lakeside one is a ripper. It’s reasonably well priced, the amenities and grounds are nothing short of epic, and its just a magic place to be while you explore the beautiful Halls Gap region.
With two wood fired heated pools, amazing views of a big plain where all sorts of animals arrive each day and views that are to die for its pretty hard to beat.
Cost: From $44 a night for our small family in an unpowered site (but they accept the TAWK discount)

Jamieson Creek
The Great Ocean Road has a massive reputation, and the caravan parks along this stretch know how to charge you for the privilege. We avoided most, and found some epic camping, including Jamieson Creek, which has you camping almost right on top of the Great Ocean Road, tucked away in a beautiful bush camp that is close to a heap of fantastic attractions

Aire River Crossing
I had no idea that Victoria has a significant number of areas with rainforest, and the Aire River Crossing Campground is one of the most stunning camp sites you can get to experience it in. This is not a suitable campground for most rigs, but if you can get a spot, and you fit in, you’ll kick back to the babbling of the river, and be able to explore a truly magnificent part of the world.
Cost: Completely free
Amenities: Drop toilet, and a water tank with water that needs boiling prior to drinking
Booking requirements: No bookings possible
Pet Friendly: No
Style of camping suitable: Tents, Swags, Rooftop tents and small vehicles only. We squeezed our Reconn R2 in, but very few trailers would fit here. Absolutely not suitable for caravans

Beauchamp Falls
The state forest camping in Victoria is out of this world. We’d heard good things about the Beauchamp Falls camping area, but until you park up metres away from a stunning view, with an epic walk down to the beautiful Beauchamp falls themselves, you can’t fully appreciate it.
We spent 3 amazing nights here, and explored a number of attractions nearby, and thought it was easily as good as some of the Great Ocean Road itself.
Cost: Absolutely free
Amenities: Drop toilets, fire pits, picnic tables
Booking requirements: No bookings possible
Pet Friendly: Yes
Style of camping suitable: All types
Fires permitted: Yes
Blanket Bay
The Great Ocean Road has some truly epic coastal camping, but a lot of it requires you to stay in busy, expensive and jam packed caravan parks, which isn’t our style. Blanket Bay though, is a much quieter, and more bushy camp site not too far off the Great Ocean Road, with incredible coastline to boot.
Cost: $15.60 per site

Booking requirements: Online on the Parks Victoria website
Pet Friendly: No
Style of camping suitable: All types, except caravans and motorhomes

Amblers Crossing
The Lerderderg region has some magic places to explore, and when we were recommended to camp at Amblers Crossing, we made the drive in. This is a bit of an adventure to get to, and requires the right setup, but the camping is pristine, quiet and away from all the crowds.

he Walhalla region is nothing short of sensational, and when you’ve got incredible camping like Coopers Creek, you cannot go wrong.
This is a beautiful camp ground, with great water access and a heap of 4WD tracks nearby. The scenery around the camp is second to none, and you’ll probably see a couple of big lizards sauntering around.

Bruntons Bridge Campground
If you’re a bit more adventurous, you can get to Bruntons Bridge, which isn’t too far away from Walhalla either, and its got some ripper, private sites overlooking the water itself. This is probably even better than Coopers Creek, with tiered camping that is in an area you’ll probably never want to leave.
The bridge itself is stunning, but the river is absolutely divine.

Pet Friendly: Yes
Style of camping suitable: Smaller camping setups. Caravans are probably not suitable

Grannys Flat Campground
After a long, slow drive from Licola, arriving at Grannys Flat Campground was a sight for sore eyes. We spent 3 days here whilst it poured with rain, and rated it as one of the best camping areas in the High Country that we’d been to.
With amazing views, good fishing, 4WD tracks everywhere, and plenty of room for the kids to ride their bikes around, it was the ultimate winner for our family.

Frys Flat Campground
Sheepyard Flats gets the reputation for great camping in the Howqua flats area, but Frys Flat is even better, and its not that far away. We were recommended to stay here, and spent a number of nights in one of the most picturesque High Country Camping areas that we’d been to.
We headed out to do Bluff and Lovicks Hut, and a heap of Howqua Flats 4WD tracks, and completely fell in love with this spot.

Running Creek Campground
On one of our days out from Frys Flat, we drove through Running Creek, which is absolutely incredible in some of the quieter camp sites across the river. This is stunning beyond any words, and completely free, which seems absolutely ludicrous to us, coming from WA.

Style of camping suitable: All types

Lovicks Hut
The Victorian High Country has some amazing huts that you can visit. Whilst you can only stay in them in emergencies, there are a few that you can camp nearby, and Lovicks is one of them. When we arrived, there were quite a few people camping around the hut, and its pretty magic being up so high in the mist, cold weather and pristine environment

Style of camping suitable: 4WD access only. Not suitable for caravans

Look after these spots
Victoria is amazing. It’s such a great state for camping and 4WDing, and if you’re going to make use of it, please do the right thing. Leave no trace, keep things tidy and do the right thing, so generations for years going forward can also appreciate these magic spots
We’ll be back to Victoria later on to do more amazing camp sites, and can’t wait.
